I mentioned in one of my recent posts how sometimes I just sort of sit on the ground and stare at my wardrobe trying to figure out how to put things together when I'm getting dressed. It got me wondering about how other people organize their wardrobes and create outfits. Do you separate by seasons? Colors? Seasonal colors?

I have a very small space to work with. I have two small closets and a dresser full of drawers, and I still have a lot of my older clothes in storage in the attic or garage. I organize my dresses, tights, and sweaters by color and the stuff in my drawers I just organize by clothing type. All my shirts are together, all my pants are together, and all my skirts are together. Having stuff in drawers really makes it hard to see what I have to work with. I long for the day that I can have a giant walk-in closet or have enough space to set up clothing racks, at least.

When I'm trying to put an outfit together, I usually start with an article of clothing that I want to wear and go through the colors in rainbow order in my head to determine what colors would go good with it and what articles of clothing I have in those colors. Other times when I'm feeling more rambunctious, I just grab a bunch of things and try to mix and match and make something of it. Most of the time, I'm laying in bed trying to fall asleep and running through all my clothes in my head, trying to think up an outfit.

I recently downloaded an app called Stylebook, which is supposed to function as a wardrobe organizer. You take individual pictures of each piece of your wardrobe (you can edit out the background) so that eventually you can virtually put outfits together with your own wardrobe. It's like being able to create a mini Polyvore board strictly with items that you own! I haven't gotten around to being able to do this yet, though. I've only taken pictures of a couple of dresses, but I plan to keep at it. It's going to take some time to get everything photographed.
I'm curious as to how you all go about outfit-planning and wardrobe organizing. Feel free to comment! By the way...here are some shots of Chris's that I wanted to share. Of course he is the man behind the camera for my outfit shots, but he enjoys shooting lots of different subjects too! I'm so glad that I can share this passion and hobby with him. :)

Hi, I really like your outfit! and your blog!
ReplyDeleteI separate my clothes by season, I just like the option of not wearing the same clothes all year, for example jeans I like the wear in the winter, but rarely wear in other seasons.
Have a nice weekend!

I don't have a whole lot of clothes and have them all on a clothes rack, just several on one hanger (as in, a dress and a cardi on one) because I don't have enough space!

That's a good idea! My mom has those Wonder hangers that hold multiple items on one hanger. They can be kind of expensive though if you need a lot of them. :\
DeleteI'm the same way with getting dressed in the morning! It's just awful. I organize my clothes by colour but I gripe about not having enough closet space allllll the time. Like seriously just 10 minutes ago. I need to download Stylebook! I've heard about it before and it would probably just be so helpful!! I love your outfit by the way :) The cardigan is adorable

Your photos are gorgeous. I love the lighting and the glimpses of the frozen river in the background. What a beautiful setting!
ReplyDeleteMy wardrobe is sorted into rainbow colours with whites before the rainbow begins, then grey, then a section of all black at the end. To be honest the rest of it - t-shirts, jumpers etc. are on shelves and just a mess. I am impressed with people who keep their clothes all neat but every time I try it goes back to the sale old mess by next week!
I don't think I really do outfit planning. I just put things on and that's that. These are lovely photos and I adore what you wear all the time.

You look gorgeous as always! Love the tights and cardi especially. That app sounds awesome too!
ReplyDeleteWell, call me crazy but I actually make my outfits in advance. Every now and then when I'm in a creative mood, I put some outfits together and snap some pictures of them with my older camera. Then, every night while I lie in bed waiting to go to sleep, I turn that camera on and go through my outfit archives. I pick an outfit I feel like wearing, and then go to bed... hahaha. I know its kind of crazy, but I like having them all saved there so I don't have to make any decisions in the morning when I'm cranky.
In terms of organizing my closet, I have it quite similar to yours: I have it divided by type (pants, shirts, skirts, dresses, etc.) and then subdivided by colors.
