Jack of All Trades

Over the past few years, I've come to realize that I am a person who has many different interests. So many that I doubt I'll have time to pursue them all in my lifetime. I actually wrote about this for my application essay when I applied to grad schools. It's one of the reasons working in a library is awesome for me because programming exists. You can make a program for just about anything and people who are interested will sign up and come and you get to share that specific interest with others. You get to dabble in a lot of different things, and that's sort of what I like to do. I want to do and learn everything and I know there's just not enough time, and that's frustrating. It's a frustrating thing to want to do so much, but know that you will most likely be held back by lack of time, funds, etc.

Over the years, I've wanted to be a singer/musician, an actress, a foley artist, a fashion designer, an event planner, a fashion journalist, a novelist, a publisher, a photographer, a burlesque dancer, and a travel agent. I'm probably missing a bunch too, and those are more professions than hobbies. There are a ton of hobbies I'm interested in like crafts, knitting, scrapbooking, painting, and more. If I tried to do everything, I would run myself right into the ground. I would have no energy or room for myself.

Things I Wish I Had Time For:

1. Theater - I was in drama club in high school, and I loved it. It taught me a lot and really got me out of my shell more. I would love to be a part of a local community company or something, but I know I would not have the time to dedicate to rehearsals, unless I wanted to have 12+ hour days everyday or never sleep.

2. Zumba - I want to get back into working out, but I have trouble finding motivation to when I don't really enjoy it. I enjoy how I feel after I complete a workout, but I never am super excited going into it. Completing Insanity was definitely a feat for me. I want a workout that I would enjoy and have fun doing, and I love to dance so recently I have been toying with the idea of trying Zumba. Again...I'd have to figure out how to fit this into my schedule since exercise takes a lot of energy. My "free" time is mainly in the evenings after I've gotten home from work and/or my internship. I put free in quotations because this time is also when I usually do blog stuff and school work, so it's not technically all free time. But this is also the time when I would have to workout...when I'm already exhausted from doing stuff all day and am ready to relax. It's so difficult! I would definitely be more inclined to workout if I had mornings free.

3. Writing and recording music - I used to do this a lot more in high school and college, but nowadays I don't have as much time to put into music. Occasionally I will sit and play my ukulele, but I don't really sit down and write music. I usually just try to play a Disney song or something. I would love to get back into making music because it makes me happy to write something that I really like.

4. Burlesque - I've always wanted to learn burlesque dancing and be in shows. I love that it's sexy, but still classy with a sort of retro vibe. Like theater, I wish I had time to practice and rehearse and also time to take lessons and whatnot. It would be so much fun. I also wish there was more happening around here when it came to burlesque.

5. Learning to sew - I wish I had time (and more patience) to learn how to sew and make my own clothing. It would probably make life a little easier in the long run if I could just make my own dresses and alter things that I find at thrift stores.

I think the problem that a lot of people with hectic schedules face is dealing not only with a lack of free time, but also a depletion of energy. There is only so much our bodies and minds can handle in a day, and I know there are some days where I get so run down that all I can do is lay in bed and watch TV, where I don't even want to be on a computer or anything. Sometimes you just have to lay around and be a lump in your PJs watching hours of New Girl or Adventure Time.

I know that in my situation, my hectic schedule won't last forever. I will graduate from school. My internship will eventually be over. My obligations will lessen. But for now, it's tough to deal with the stress of feeling like I won't have a lot of time to recharge myself. Some things will have to be put on the shelf for the future, and it can be hard to accept that. I will get down about it at times, but I just have to hang on to the hope that I will eventually get to some of the stuff I would like to do. There will be a time between graduating and eventually "settling down" that I hope to fill with a lot of my personal goals and accomplishments. For now, I still gotta work towards it.

  1. First off, you look adorable and...classic, somehow. Love that.

Secondly, this list of things you'd be interested in pursuing is so interesting to me. I hope you are able to do some of them at least; this is making me think of what would be on my own list...

  3. I have done zumba on and off for a while, but started doing it regularly since January and wow! i can't rec it enough! i recently quit my day job to focus on grad school/Mitla Moda/my full-time job search in the town i'll be moving to, but before that, i used to go to the 5:30 classes right after work and even though i'd get home later, i'd come home super energized and actually get way more done those evenings. now i go a few times a week and am just loving it. i love getting in shape and having fun dancing at the same time/not dancing in a club and being hit on by creepers haha (which has been eons). learning to really sew is on my hopes of things to learn once i finish school in May too and burlesque & theater, wow sounds amazing!! having many interests can get tricky, but after undergrad i was so discouraged by ppl who seemed to never want to learn a new thing again, and decided i never wanted to be like that, so it's great & that your job allows it!! oh also, LOVED your response to Kristian's Q&A! i feel like we have really sim body types actually. i've come to really love my curves as well.

  4. I can SO relate to this post. I'm also a Jane-of-all-Trades. I've dabbled in so much. And #2. I used to be a certified Zumba instructor, and I miss those days. I was motivated and had so much energy, and was SO much more fit. These days, I just can't find my motivation anymore.

    Loved this entire post!! :)

  5. I definitely feel you on wanting to do everything, I feel that way right now (and I'm finished with grad school - I should already be doing what I want to be doing, right?), I go through phases of similar interests to yours lol (travel agent, fashion designer), even without time, it's still fun to think about all the possibilities!

  6. I am so grateful to have found your blog! Only wish I had found it sooner. :) You're adorable and we seem to have much in common. I think it's important to spend your life doing things that you enjoy! I know it's hard to prioritize but there is a time and a season for everything - it's good that you are aware of what makes you happy! Some people are meant to do more than one thing.

  7. I totally understand where you're coming from. There is too little time to do everything that your little hear desires. I just bought a ukulele in hopes of learning the basics but it's just sittin' over on a shelf collecting dust. Ha! I love your thoughts and I can so relate. You are very good at being super adorable!

  8. I relate so much to this post. I feel like I have so many different interests and not enough time to pursue them all. I love how you broke it down to different professions/hobbies too. Also, loved the outfit photos.
